Closed Eyes – Solo Vibraphone

This piece was a bit of an experiment. I wrote the whole piece at once, sitting in silence. I didn’t touch the instrument or work anything out before I hit record. It was a difficult task, but very rewarding. I think I’m going to try this more in the future. What you see in the video is literally the first time I’m playing it.

Also, I am exploring and extended technique here. In the melody, I’m working on playing a dead stroke with one mallet and a regular stroke in the other mallet in the same hand. This gives a small impression of a pitch bend, or a hammer on for a string player (I got the idea while transcribing some banjo music).

Well, I’d call this experiment a success!
